The antidote for overthinking

Overthinking the writing process happens to the best of us.

We overthink the process, and before we know it, we're like zombies staring at a screen.

The more we stare, the more we get discouraged.

And the more we get discouraged, the faster we wanna quit.

Well, recently I've been using an app that has helped me get past the "overthinking" stage of my writing.

Do you struggle with overthinking what you're going to write about?

Are you willing to sacrifice writing perfection?

If so, look no further because I’m about to share the app that has cured my "overthinking" during the writing process.

Let me explain.

Write First, Edit Later

Before I started dialing in on my writing and editing process, I was wasting countless hours.

How?

Because I was writing and editing at the same time.

I would type out a sentence or two and if it didn't sound right, I would go back and edit it right away.

Until I started separating the two, I wasn't seeing measurable results.

When you write, the left side of your brain jumps into action.

It helps you put words together, make sentences, and organize your ideas.

But when you edit, the right side of your brain takes over.

This side is great at spotting mistakes, fixing sentences, and making things look better.

When I found this out, I went from writing one long form to writing 2-3 long form pieces of content in the same hour.

Don't believe me?

The next time you write, keep on writing.

Fight the urge to go edit or change your writing even if it doesn't make sense.

Then, on another day, pull up that same piece of writing.

This is when you'll want to make all the changes and all the edits.

It will go a lot smoother.

It has for me.

The Most Dangerous Writing App

Now that we know to separate our writing from our editing, I want to introduce you to my new favorite writing tool.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been using this website called “The Most Dangerous Writing App”.

I found out about this website through my writing mentor Dakota Robertson.

Dakota Robertson is the guy that I’m learning all the sauce from to write better and grow my online presence.

When Dakota mentioned this, at first, I brushed the website off.

Then I went and tried it for myself.

This app made me feel like I was playing a game.

The game it reminded me I was playing was Minecraft on hardcore mode.

How?

If you’ve ever played Minecraft, Minecraft is a pretty peaceful game...unless you play on hardcore mode.

When you play Minecraft on hardcore mode, if you die, your entire world gets deleted.

In the same way, if you write using this app and stop for more than 7 seconds, all your writing gets deleted.

All your progress, all your hard work gone in a flash.

How I Use This

Step 1:

Like Minecraft, before you start, you're given some options.

Start writing with a generated prompt?

Or

Start writing without one?

I always choose to write without one.

If you don't know what to write about, you can check out last week's e-mail where I talked about how I write to solve other people's problems.

Step 2:

The next choice is choosing between a word count goal or a set timer goal.

I’ve always chosen the timer route because this helps me turn on the jets when I write.

Whatever you prefer, make sure you set your goal to your liking.

Step 3:

Good luck.

In all seriousness, this is the part where you don't want to stop writing.

Keep on writing and don't stop until you've reached your goal.

If you stop for longer than 3 seconds, your screen and words will become red.

Wait any longer and your writing starts fading away.

By the 7 second mark, poof, it all vanishes.

Your writing will never see the eyes of your audience.

You can’t get it back, you won’t be able to recover it.

If it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

By the way, make sure you go full screen.

This will ensure you're focused and giving it your full undivided attention.

Step 4:

My favorite screen to see.

Congratulations.

If you made it to the end, you deserve to celebrate.

The app will now give you the option to export your writing and save it for later.

There's No Such Thing As Perfection

If you're a perfectionist, this website will help you get over that real quick.

There is no time to go back and edit.

There is only time to write, keep on writing, and finish writing.

So, there you have it.

My new favorite writing app.

I hope this helps you overcome "overthinking" in your writing as much as it's helped me.

That's it for now my brothers and sisters.

P.S.

If you wanna check out my Twitter/X where I post often, you can check it out here.

It’s your brother Alex signing out.

Until next time.

Peace.
