Make a list of non-negotiables
Recently, I started making a list of non-negotiables.
“What are non-negotiables?”
I’m glad you asked.
To me, a non-negotiable is a “thing” that you do every day or certain days of the week, no matter what.
This can be something like ‘going to the gym 3x a week’.
Or ‘working on your side hustle for 1 hour a day’.
There are zero excuses for not getting non-negotiables done.
If these non-negotiables go into the late hours of the night, so be it.
If you have to wake up before your alarm to get them done, so be it.
When you cross one of these non-negotiables off, it’s like telling yourself, “today's a win because I did x, y, and z.
Here is a small preview of what my current list of things that I do no matter what looks like:
1. Read/study the Bible.
2. Engage on Twitter.
3. Work on my side hustle.
4. Write at least 250 words.
Sometimes not in that specific order, but you get the idea.
As you can see, my list isn’t long at all.
Nor do I want to make it a long list either.
But, as I’ve quoted earlier, these 4 things get done no matter what.
Sometimes I’ll dedicate 2 hours to a task like reading/studying my bible.
And other times it might only be 30 minutes because I agreed to work for a co-worker on my day off 1 hour before his shift.
For tasks like “writing 250 words”, this doesn’t take an hour.
It doesn’t even take 15 minutes.
It’s easy enough that I can show up and bust it out every day.
And yes, life happens and sometimes you slip on a banana peel.
But, the most important thing is showing up and becoming the person who does the things they said they would.
If anything, keep the promise you made to yourself.
Because if you can’t keep your word to yourself, how are you going to keep it with others?
And when you don’t keep your word to others, they won't respect you.
So, keep your word to yourself.
Until next time,
Alex out.
